Check your smoke alarms this Sunday

The American Red Cross is advising the public to check their smoke alarms this Sunday, marked by the end of Daylight Savings Time.

While Daylight Saving’s Time isn’t practiced in Arizona, this Sunday is the perfect time to check. With colder weather in the forecast, it’s important to note heating equipment is one of the biggest culprits behind house fires.

The Red Cross reminds the public that house fires are the nation’s biggest disaster threats, commonly caused by cooking and heating the home. The holiday season on the horizon increases these risks.

The Red Cross gives the following tips for this Sunday:

Working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home. Practice an escape plan with everyone in the household until they can escape in two minutes or less. For more tips and information, visit redcross.org/ homefires .
