Arizona Congressional delegation weighs in on impeachment

Arizona’s Congressional delegation has weighed in on plans for an impeachment inquiry. Not surprisingly, opinions follow party lines.

Republican Congressman Paul Gosar represents Arizona’s 4th District, which includes parts of Yuma County. Gosar opposes impeachment, and supports President Donald Trump.

In a statement released Tuesday Gosar wrote: ” Democrats know they can’t beat Donald Trump in an election, so they are resorting to means of removing him from office instead. ”

Republicans Representatives Andy Biggs, David Schweikert , and Debbie Lesko are also vocal opponents of an impeachment inquiry.

Democratic Representative Raul Grijalva’s District 3, also includes parts of Yuma County. Grijalva has long supported a formal investigation into the President’s actions.

In a Tweet posted Tuesday Grijalva wrote: ” The President’s invitation for a foreign government to investigate a political rival and invite interference in our elections is against the law and another example of Trump putting his interests over those of the American people. I support an impeachment inquiry. ”

Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick, of the 2nd District, supports the investigation. While Congressman Tom O’Halleran , a Democrat from Arizona’s 1st District, has held off from voicing an opinion one way or the other.

There are two Arizona Democrats who want to move past the inquiry and straight on to impeachment. Representatives Greg Stanton, from the 9th District, and Ruben Gallego , from the 7th , say Congress needs to impeach the President to defend the rule of law.

Democratic Senator Krysten Sinema has not directly weighed in on the investigation. She did release a statement to the Arizona Republic Tuesday, saying: ” I agree with my Republican and Democratic Senate colleagues that Congress must be given complete access to the whistleblower’s report and transcript as required by law… Arizonans deserve a transparent and accountable government. ” ​​​​​​

Republican Senator Martha McSally , who’s up for re-election in 2020, chose not to address the conduct which the President is accused of. Instead, she chose to focus on the repercussions of impeachment.

In an interview with Politico McSally said: ” Literally, they’re on a path to reelect the president, keep the Senate majority and flip the House… It ‘s a total distraction. People can make their voices heard at the ballot box, right? ”
