Two arrested at border, accused of smuggling fentanyl

A man and a teen were arrested for allegedly smuggling fentanyl through the San Luis Port of Entry Friday, on separate occasions.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said officers referred a 27-year-old San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico, man for additional inspection of his Dodge sedan.

Officers said a canine alerted to a scent coming from the vehicle’s transmission. Officers removed several packages of fentanyl from the location.

CBP said the fentanyl pills weighed approximately four pounds, estimating $40,000.

Later that afternoon, a 17-year-old San Luis, Ariz., teen attempted to enter the U.S. through the pedestrian lanes when officers referred him for further questioning.

Following a canine alert to the crotch of the teen’s pants, led officers to the discovery of a single package of fentanyl pills, CBP said. The drugs weighed nearly a pounds, estimating $9,100.

Officers seized the drugs and vehicle, while both subjects were arrested and then turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
