Home Grown: New course prepares students for planting produce

Have you ever wanted to learn what goes into the process of getting your food from the field to the table? Well now, there’s a class for that!

A new community gardening course is now available at the University of Arizona Agricultural Center taught by Jenine Lane who is the program coordinator for the Master Gardeners program.

The course is part of the geology department for people who are part of plant science departments.

This class is in preparation for the Field to Feast tours put on every year, as well as in combination with Lane’s master gardener class.

Students will be able to learn everything they need to know about planting produce.

“We have labs every other Saturday where we are going to actually go out to the garden, and we are going to talk about when to plant and what we are going to plant. We are going to talk about seeding, we are going to talk about drip irrigation, flood irrigation, we are going to talk about everything that you have to think about when you want to grow here in Yuma,” said Lane.

The end goal of the course is to incorporate artichokes and brussel sprouts grown by the students in the University’s greenhouse in the Field to Feast tours.

Once students complete the course, they will also have the opportunity to become master gardeners.

The Field to Feast tours begin in January 2020 and if you would like to participate, you can go to Visit Yuma’s website.
