Customs and Border Protection intercept meth smuggling attempts

U.S. Customs and Border Protection ( CBP ) officers at the Calexico port of entry intercepted two meth smuggling attempts on Sunday.

The first incident occurred on September 1 at about 6:35 a.m. at the East port of entry, when a 25-year-old Mexican citizen was observed driving a White 2010 Ford F-150 stake bed truck. Upon inspection the officer referred the driver and truck to second inspection.

A CBP officer used the port’s imaging system to scan the truck where anomalies were detected within the bed of the truck. Upon searching the truck, officers say they found 28 wrapped packages of meth hidden within the wood of the stake bed in the truck. The meth amounted to 135-pounds with a street value of $216,000.

The driver of the truck was said to be a resident of Mexicali, and was arrested.

The second incident occurred at 10:15 a.m. at the Calexico West port of entry. CBP says they encountered a 43-year-old female and a 42-year-old male in a black 2015 Dodge Challenger. Both occupants and the vehicle were referred for further examination of the vehicle.

Officers used the port’s imaging system and a canine team which led them to discover 70 wrapped packages of meth hidden inside the quarter panels of the vehicle.

The meth weighed out to 73-pounds with a street value of approximately $116,800.

The driver was a resident of Clovis, California and the passenger was a resident of Oxnard California, both whom are U.S. citizens.
