Dust Abatement Pilot Project approved for Elementary School
The Imperial County Air Pollution Control District ( ICAPCD ) approved the Dust Abatement Pilot Project for McCabe Union Elementary School on August 6.
The pilot project is set in place to reduce the amount of flying dust from unpaved areas. With this, students at McCabe Elementary will be able to safely participate in outdoor activities.
Ground preparation, earthwork, and spray application of a Dust Control Product will be set on 170,875 square feet of unpaved bus parking lots, bus drop off zones, alternative parking lots, and any other unpaved areas along the perimeter of the school.
ICAPCD approved this project because they say these unpaved areas have regular vehicle traffic which generates into flying dust. This flying dust directly affect the health of students and faculty in classrooms and playgrounds. ICAPCD say the dust can worsen existing respiratory health issues for students and faculty, which forces them to remain indoors to avoid the exposure to dust.
The project is expected to be completed by October 31.
The ICAPCD Clean Air Trust Fund is funding the project for a total of $147,127.85 and say that there will be no impact to the General Fund.
