Summer heat can lead to migraines

Millions of Americans spend days each month living with the debilitating symptoms of a migraine. Summer is an even more difficult time of year for those who suffer from frequent migraines.

According to the American Academy of Neurology, there are numerous triggers that contribute to why it is especially painful during the summer, including dehydration and environmental factors such as a changed sleep schedule and exposure to pollen and humidity.

While the underlying causes of migraine are not yet known, they are believed to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. ” said Dr. Stewart J. Tepper , Director of the Dartmouth Headache Center. ” There are a variety of symptoms – typically including unilateral pulsating headaches, nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people may experience only a few migraine days per month, while others may be affected by many more migraine days. ”

Some ways to combat migraines are to keep a water bottle with you at all times, as dehydration is a leading cause of migraines.

Also, remember to wear hats and sunglasses to shield yourself from harmful rays and to keep your medication out of the sun.
