Community prepares to celebrate 4th of July

Imperial Valley College grounds were filled more than usual on Thursday night for Fourth of July celebration.

Crowds thronged not just the campus but also the roads around it and fields in the area. All this to witness the amazing fireworks display that began at 9:30 p.m.

Over 40 vendors were on hand to offer snacks and information regarding various services in the area.

The Drifters Car Club lined up their vintage cars for the public to enjoy.

It was a night in which the community came together to cheer the fireworks spectacle and to be grateful for the freedom they enjoy.

Hundreds of people are stocking up on their fireworks arsenal from the dozens of stands countywide.

Fireworks combos went from $25.00 to $550.00 at some stands with such attractive names as Morning Glory, American Spirit Sizzler, Rocket Fountain, Purple Rain, Cracklin Cactus and, of course, the Confetti Canon.

Vendors share safety tips with the enthusiastic buyers: never allow children to play or ignite fireworks; never carry fireworks in your pockets; never point or throw fireworks at someone; keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher handy in case of fire.

The big fireworks event is tonight at Imperial Valley College. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and the fireworks at 9:30 p.m. The event is free for the entire family.
