EC Border Patrol agent assaulted in Calexico

A Calexico Border Patrol agent was allegedly assaulted by an individual near the U.S.-Mexico border Saturday morning.

According to Customs and Border Protection ( CBP ), the incident happened at about 11:55 a.m. near the intersection of 1st Street and Dool Avenue in Calexico. An agent responded to the area to arrest a man believed to have entered the country illegally through a breach in an old deteriorated section of the wall.

During that time, CBP said a second individual threw a soft-ball sized concrete rock through the breach in the wall. The rock went through the driver side’s window and struck the agent’s face and the rock thrower fled soon after.

The rock caused a serious laceration above the agent’s eye who was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

“Our Border Patrol agents work in extremely dangerous situations and under heavy duress,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez. “However, our agents continue to perform at an exceptional high level carrying out their duties with integrity and compassion.”

Authorities arrested the man who entered illegally and was transported to the Calexico station for questioning.
