Yuma artist receives grant to create four-mile-long mural

Lia Littlewood of Littlewood Fine Arts & Community Co-op believes that art is essential to the community.

Whether it’s creating or simply just admiring it, she believes that everyone should have public access to art.

Littlewood was recently chosen to receive a $5,000 grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts for research and development of a specific project.

Her project is creating a four-mile-long mural in the city of Yuma.

The mural will stretch from First Street all the way to 22nd street. The design will highlight different time periods of art, such as surrealism and western art. It is estimated to take about one year to complete.

Other winners of the grant were from all over Arizona, but Littlewood was the only one from Yuma.

When asked about difficulties like funding, or the recent instance of vandalism on one of her murals, she doesn’t let it deter from her passion.

” I think of it like, I’m at 111 murals right now and I’m going to keep creating art, ” she said. ” My goal is to create about 1,000 until I’m dead. ”
