Local cab company steps up to help during Memorial Day Weekend

Impaired driving is one of America’s most often committed and deadliest crimes.

Law enforcement throughout Yuma County will be conducting DUI details this holiday weekend starting Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 27.

According to Alcohol.org, on average people consume at least three drinks on Memorial Day, but it only takes one drink to impair your driving.

Authorities are stressing the idea of avoiding getting a DUI this weekend by arranging for a designated driver.

However, Go Green Transportation takes even more initiative as designated drivers, with their driver pickup system.

Go Green Transportation co-owner, Johny Hayden, said all of his drivers are trained to conduct driver pickups.

He said, “[Go Green Drivers] can visibly see people who need a ride. They can be sitting on a bench downtown. They can even be sitting on the curb and they don’t know what to do. So [the Go Green Driver] gets out of their vehicle and go over and ask if [the person] needs a ride. 90% of the time they say yes. And a lot of times, we’ll take them back the next day to get their vehicle.”

People can always spot a Go Green taxi driver by their green uniform shirt and white van.

Hayden said their taxis are always visible on Main Street downtown, doing turnaround trips all night, especially during the holiday weekend.

Uber and Lyft are other options, as well as other cab services.

The Yuma Police Department and the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office both enforce the state’s 0.08% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) law.

Please remember, there is zero tolerance for drivers under 21 with even small amounts of alcohol in their system.
