George Floyd laid to rest in Houston

Private service streamed to hundreds of thousands around the world - NBC's Jay Gray reports

HOUSTON, Tex. (KYMA, KECY) - Fifteen days after he died, George Floyd was laid to rest in Houston Tuesday.

The in-person service was private, only for family, friends, and invited guests, but the service was streamed to hundreds of thousands of viewers across the country and around the world.

Viewers witnessed a powerful, emotional service filled with laughter, tears, praise, and prayers as Floyd's family joined a grieving nation in saying one final goodbye.

"God can heal your soul.."

George Floyd is finally home.

"It's time for us to celebrate his life, we may weep we may mourn we'll be comforted and we will find hope."

It's a hope shared by a nation, as evidenced by images of tens of thousands marching across the country and around the world.

"We honor him because when he took his last breath, the rest of us will now be able to breathe." said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

But for Floyd's family, breaths are difficult to gather right now.

"All I think about is when he was yelling for momma." said Floyd's brother.

Their hearts are heavy, their loss overwhelming.

"I'm gonna miss my brother a whole lot.. just want to say i love you.. giving me my own personal superman."

George Floyd is a super hero to many here. They say his message and mission doesn't end with his passing.

"Out of his death has come a movement. a world wide movement." said Rev. William Lawson.

But on this day the "movement" pauses, if only for a few hours, to honor his memory.

Floyd will be laid to rest next to his mother in a family plot.
