Asymptomatic carriers still pose a threat to spread COVID-19

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus can still spread the potentially deadly virus, which is why the Yuma County Health Department wants everyone to take their recommendations seriously.

An asymptomatic carrier, also known as a silent spreader, is someone who experiences mild to no symptoms of the coronavirus. These silent spreaders often don’t know they have the virus unless they get tested. 

During a press conference on Monday, an expert said that transmission of the coronavirus with asymptomatic carriers is very rare.
This, however, sparked criticism among scientists.

On Tuesday, they retracted their statement and say there is much that remains unknown when it comes to these carriers.

The Yuma County Health Department (YCHD) says that when they speak to some of those in their community who tests positive for COVID-19, they come across people who say they had mild cold symptoms, or have just lost their sense of taste. 

Although these asymptomatic cases don’t post a threat to certain people, it can still be spread.

This is why the YCHD recommends wearing a mask to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and follow social distancing protocols.

The CDC stated on their website that 35% of coronavirus cases are form those who are asymptomatic.
