Cicadas to emerge from underground after 17 years

(KYMA, KECY, CNN) A group of periodical cicadas that emerge every 17 years, will tunnel out of their long dormancy and parts of easter and central United States. 

Experts say a massive amount  of the noisy bugs are making their way to the skies after 17-years underground.

They believe as many as 1.5 million cicadas may emerge in parts of Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.

The insects do not pose a threat to people and they do not bite or sting. However, they could damage trees.

There are 15 broods of cicadas that are on life cycles of either 13 or 17 years. They appear mostly in the eastern and central parts of the U.S.

In addition to Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Brood X will also emerge in Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington D.C.
