Only hours left before the deadline for FEMA funds

Agencies have until 5 p.m. Friday to apply for federal money

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The clock is quickly ticking towards Friday's 5 p.m. deadline for local agencies to apply for federal aid to help with coronvirus response.

The United Way of Yuma County (UW) announced last week it received $856,460 in funding through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA.) Most of the funds come from the Coronavirus Aid, Recovery, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The measure provides widespread relief to both individuals and agencies during the pandemic.

President and CEO of UW, Karina Jones said, "This public health crisis is impacting all of us. Our hungry, homeless and senior populations are facing extraordinary challenges."

The funding will help local organizations care for those who need help most in the Yuma County.

Non-profit, faith-based, and local government agencies that provide food and shelter services to those in need can apply for these funds. They can then use the money for:

  • Food services, congregating meals or groceries.
  • Lodging in a mass shelter, or in a hotel/motel or other off-site shelter facility limited to 30 days assistance per person or household.
  • One month rent or mortgage assistance to prevent evictions or foreclosure.
  • Utility assistance for one month of service for gas, electric, and water service.
  • Supplies, including but not limited to cleaning supplies, and small equipment essential to feed or shelter people.

The deadline for agencies to apply for these funds is Friday, May 15th at 5:00PM. Those who are interested in applying must contact Karina Jones at karina.jones@local.unitedway.org or 928-783-0515 or visit their website.
