NFL Draft recap

Round 1 results for area teams of interest

The 1st virtual NFL draft got off to a predictable start with the 1st 3 picks; as LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young and Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah all got the top nods by Cincinnati, Washington and Detroit.

From there, the picks started to get interesting.

It really started with the Miami Dolphins, who took a chance with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa out of Alabama; who has tons of upside, even though he's coming off a serious injury.

From there, the Los Angeles Chargers followed suit.

Coming off the offseason split with longtime quarterback Philip Rivers, the Bolts wanted to make it a priority to find their next franchise guy under center.

With the 6th selection, the Chargers took Oregon's Justin Herbert.

Herbert has a lot of upside as a dual threat quarterback, but has to work on his accuracy with the long ball.

Through a trade, the Chargers also picked up a defensive piece in Oklahoma inside linebacker Kenneth Murray with the 23rd overall pick.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals have needs on the offensive line, wide receiver and running back; but instead, they chose to go with the best overall player at number 8.

The Red Birds might have gotten the steal of the draft, selecting outside linebacker Isaiah Simmons out of Clemson.

Simmons is a freak of an athlete, with the ability to go after the quarterback, to cover tight ends, and to cover the perimeter against the ground attack of any offense.

As far as the Las Vegas Raiders are concerned, they had 2 1st round picks to meet 2 significant needs.

With the 12th overall pick, the Raiders took Alabama speedy wideout Henry Ruggs III.

Ruggs has shown the ability to potentially take the ball to the house every time he gets his number called.

The Silver and Black then added Ohio State cornerback Damon Arnette with the 19th overall selection.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Rams don't have a 1st round pick, due to a recent trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 2nd and 3rd rounds will continue on Friday.
