US and Canada border restrictions extended

Closed to nonessential travel for 30 more days

WASHINGTON D.C. (KYMA, KECY) - The United States and Canada have agreed to keep their border closed to nonessential travel for another 30 days.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the agreement will keep people on both sides of the border safe during the pandemic.

“The agreement is the same terms. It’s just extended for another 30 days. It will ensure we continue to get essential goods and services back and forth across the border,” Trudeau said.

Last month the US and Canada agreed to limit border crossings to just essential travel, and the deal was due to expire this week, reports NBC.

There are many exceptions to the travel ban:

For instance, workers like healthcare professionals, airline crews and truck drivers will still be permitted to cross.

Important to our region, Canadians who live in the U.S. for part of the year and are returning to Canada are also among those who are exempted from the current travel ban.
