Active shooting suspect formally charged in court

The Somerton man who deputies say fired dozens of shots at his family members, leading to the evacuation of an entire neighborhood Friday night was back in court Tuesday morning.

22-year-old Daniel Alvarez Carranza even fired at a border patrol helicopter before barricading himself in his home for several hours.

Tuesday, the suspect’s mental health was put into question as he was formally charged.

Carranza sat before the judge, swiveling left to right in his chair.

His eyes wandered aimlessly around the courtroom.

Carranza was represented by a public defender who urged the court to consider releasing the alleged shooter to pre-trial services based on his ” needs ” .

Public defender, Eugene Marquez, said, ” If there are any mental health issues or any other services he needs that he comply with pretrial services as far as what they deem appropriate for his needs. ”

The family did not appear in court.

However, a victims’ advocate from Amberly’s place read their statement.

The family said they hope Carranza ” gets the help he needs. ”

The judge denied Carranza’s release.

He will be held in custody on a $200,000 cash bond.

He’s facing five felony charges including reckless endangerment and aggravated assault for firing at authorities.

Carranza will be in Superior Court later this month.
