Woman arrested in Chandler hit-and-run crash that left father and son dead
CHANDLER, AZ ( 3TV /CBS 5) – A woman has been arrested in a hit-and-run crash in Chandler Monday night that left a man and his son dead.
On Wednesday morning, Chandler police say they arrested 54-year-old Michelle Hagerman for her alleged role in the collision.
Detectives also seized the suspect vehicle from her residence.
Seth Tyler with Chandler police said Hagerman was arrested in Tempe after the department received a tip Tuesday night.
” There was a little bit of relief [hearing about the arrest], but there’s no news that could bring back my uncle and my cousin, ” said Yasin Uddin . ” No matter how I feel, it’s not going to bring them back. I miss them dearly. ”
Court documents state that a neighbor of Hagerman called police after seeing the description of the suspect’s vehicle.
Tyler said Hagerman lives in Tempe and just moved here from another state.
Documents state that an unidentified woman called the hospital to ask about the victims. According to court documents, a nurse answered and the woman said ” her husband was driving the vehicle that struck the pedestrians. ” The nurse told the woman to call the police and the woman hung up.
The father killed in the crash was identified as 50-year-old Mohammad Misbah Uddin , of Bangladesh. The child involved was Uddin’s son, 13-year-old Abdulla Uddin .
” We took him off of life support and are letting nature take its course, ” the Uddin family said Tuesday. A short time later, the Chandler Police Department confirmed the boy’s death.
” My cousin, he was supposed to start sixth grade the day after he was killed, ” Yasin said. ” He was really excited. He was telling me he wanted to go to the State Fair that was happening this weekend. My plan was to take my family, take my cousin, have them try popcorn, cotton candy, go on the Ferris wheel — do all these things and that’s not going to happen. ”
It crash happened at about 5:45 Monday evening at Alma School Road and Erie Street, which is north of Chandler Boulevard.
According to police, the two were crossing Alma School Road at Erie Street when a northbound SUV hit them. Mohammad Uddin was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy was taken to a Chandler hospital, where he died the next day.
” I just heard the thump of something, a car hitting something, and I heard a scream, and I came out a few minutes later to look, and I just saw a couple people in the street, ” said Brian Merrion , a witness.
Several people tried to help the father and son before first responders arrived.
” I saw people doing CPR on one dude and another person that seemed to be out, ” said Merrion .
Investigators said the driver of the SUV that hit them continued north on Alma School Road. Police say the SUV is a dark-colored 2012-2016 Dodge Durango.
Police said that the driver was likely speeding.
Documents state that after Hagerman was arrested, she told police she thought she hit a dog at first. She told police that she got out of her car and walked toward the scene, but then went back to her car when she saw other people getting out of their cars to help. Documents state that she admitted that she knew it was illegal to leave the scene of a crash.
” I’m not angry at her, ” Yasin said. ” I’m really not. ”
Hagerman was booked into jail on two counts of hit and run .
She appeared before a judge just after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
” My family had a whole vision they wanted to do coming here, ” Yasin said. ” They wanted to be active members of society and make a difference. … We’re just healing. This should not have happened. ”
