EL CENTRO, Calif. (KSWT, KYMA, T3)

The El Centro Police Department (ECPD), is investigating a stabbing that happened over the weekend.

According to police the attack involved multiple people and they are searching for the suspects.

Police say the victim was stabbed at least four times.

It happened Sunday just before 1:00 a.m.

Police say the 19-year-old victim was walking near Ocotillo Avenue with friends, when he was stabbed.

“A group of individuals were leaving a party in the area of Ocotillo and La Brucherie, when out of nowhere a group of another individuals confronted them and demanded their property,” said Jeff Malcomb, ECPD detective.

According to police, the victim was attacked by a group of five people and multiple weapons may have been used.

“That’s what they reported. They reported pocket  knives. Possible machete, and another witness reported something along the lines of a pipe,” said Malcomb.

ECPD says there is no indication that the stabbing was gang related.

Residents we spoke to remember loud music coming from a nearby party, but they were shocked to hear about the stabbing.

“I think it’s terrible when anybody has violence done to them. Whether it’s a stabbing a shooting, or just getting mugged. Why do you want to hurt people,” said Steve Kimmey, El Centro resident.

The victim was transported to Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs to be treated.

Anyone with information on the stabbing is encouraged to contact ECPD.
