U.S. launches strikes on Iran on eve of Election Day

IRAN (CBS, KYMA) - The U.S. military launched strikes on Iran overnight, on the eve of Election Day.

Cell phone video captured explosions lighting up the sky.

Several U.S. officials tell CBS news American forces carried out the limited defense strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
One senior defense official added the attacks were in response to Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps firing on a U.S. aircraft.

Iran claimed it shot down several reconnaissance drones yesterday near the strait.

President Trump again said he believed a deal with Tehran could be reached soon, with mediators meeting in Qatar this week.

High energy prices, sparked by the 8 month long conflict is a key issue as millions of Americans head to the polls today.

The war with Iran has so far cost the U.S. military at least $47 billion dollars, according to a new estimate from U.S. central command obtained by CBS news.
