General in charge of planning future operations fired

WASHINGTON (CBS, KYMA) - The general in charge of planning future operations has just been fired in another high-level military shakeup.

This comes as President Donald Trump is considering launching new attacks on Iran, and he's the latest top military leader to be forced out.

A Pentagon official told CBS News Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia Wednesday over allegations he leaked classified information related to the war in Iran and the Ukraine war.

The official said Lt. Gen. Sylvia failed three polygraph tests after they questioned him about sharing classified information with the media.

The allegations against him have not been independently verified, and the case has been referred to the Justice Department.

Sylvia served as the Director of Strategy, Plans and Policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff that's sort of helping to coordinate military planning. He previously commandeered the Army's 101st Airborne Division.

Now, his removal comes amid a broader shakeup of senior military leadership under Secretary Hegseth.

Sylvia is the second general to be fired from that post. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire last October.
