Woman who pled guilty in fake pregnancy scheme targeting former ‘Bachelor’ star sentenced

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA, NBC) - An Arizona woman who pled guilty in fake pregnancy scheme targeting a former "Bachelor" star was sentenced to one month in jail Friday.

Laura Owens, 36, pled guilty to four felony charges, including perjury, stealing the identity of another and two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices, back in August, according to NBC affiliate KPNX.

In addition to the 30 days in jail, KPNX said Owens was also sentenced to 11 years of supervised probation.

KPNX also said the judge imposed a 12-month deferred jail sentence, which will be avoided if Owens follows the terms of her probation. However, if she violates her probation, she can face up to 12 years in jail.

Owens, who is the daughter of Bay Area radio legend Ronn Owens, filed a paternity suit in 2023 against former "Bachelor" star Clayton Echard, accusing him of getting her pregnant with his twins, KPNX said.

She later claimed she miscarried. However, prosecutors alleged Owens altered an ultrasound image, fabricated a pregnancy video and lied under oath.

Two of the charges she pled guilty to involved similar allegations against a second man, Greg Gillespie.

Following the sentencing hearing, Echard told KPNX the judge failed him.

"I have nothing else to say. Anything else I say will just come from a place of anger...the judge showed he had no spine and the system failed me," Echard expressed.
