Jury finds Ohio man guilty in the death of former deputy

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio (NBC, KYMA) - A jury in Ohio found Rodney Hinton Jr. guilty on all charges in the death of former Hamilton County Deputy Larry Henderson.

The verdicts came down on day three of deliberations.

Hinton was found guilty of murder, reckless homicide, and felonious assault.

The judge in the case allowed the jury to consider the charges of reckless homicide as a lesser charge to the aggravated murder charges he initially faced.

Hinton was on trial after he intentionally ran down and killed Henderson on May 2, 2025, a day after his son was shot and killed by a police officer, and just hours after he was allowed to view the police body cam video from the incident.

Henderson had retired just five months before he was killed, and was working as a special deputy, directing traffic for the university of Cincinnati's graduation ceremonies when he was hit and killed by Hinton's car.

Defense attorneys argued the trauma of his son's death, combined with Hinton's history of severe mental illness, left him acutely psychotic at the time.

Prosecutors maintained Hinton was grieving and angry, but understood his actions were wrong.

The death penalty was taken off the table in the case after three separate mental health evaluations found hinton to be seriously mentally ill.

Sentencing has been set for November 16.
