High surf floods the streets of Newport Beach, California

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Leaders in Newport Beach, California declared a local emergency Friday after pounding surf flooded several city blocks.

The flooding impacted at least ten blocks of the Balboa Peninsula.

In some areas the water was knee-high.

Most had drained by late afternoon, leaving damage behind.

City crews are working to rebuild protective sand berms in the Orange County community.
