(CBS, KYMA) - (CBS, KYMA) - On October 7, 2003, California held a gubernatorial recall election where then-Governor Gray Davis lost and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger became governor.

He announced his candidacy on the August 6, 2003 episode of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." He is a moderate Republican and describes himself as "fiscally conservative and socially liberal."

Schwarzenegger was sworn in on November 17, 2003 to serve the remainder of Davis' term, and was then reelected in the 2006 California gubernatorial election to serve a full term.

In 2011, he reached his term limit as governor and returned to acting.
