Misconduct probes prompt fraternity suspensions at U of A

TUCSON, Ariz. (NBC, KYMA) - The University of Arizona has placed all 21 Interfraternity Council chapters under an interim activities suspension as the university investigates multiple reports of misconduct involving nearly half of its fraternity chapters.

"There should be no room for the things that have been going on recently in Greek life," said Tucker English, Social Chair for Alpha Gamma Rho. "A lot of these frats like to take it a little too far and they're kind of running a reputation for all of us."

In a letter that went out this week, the university's Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman said her office is investigating misconduct reports involving nearly half of the school's 21 fraternity chapters. That's just seven weeks into this semester.

Lieberman said her office is at capacity for the number of organizational cases it can investigate at once and every case right now involves a fraternity chapter.

An advisor from each fraternity will need to attend at least one mandatory meeting with the dean of students in the next week.

Fraternities currently in good standing, like Alpha Gamma Rho, will return to that status after the meeting.

The U of A investigated fraternities this spring for a range of alleged incidents, including physical assault, drugs and hazing. Now, several more chapters are being investigated.

English said the fraternity-wide suspension is not a bad idea. He stresses no one needs to get hurt or get themselves in bad situations.

"I think it'll change a little bit. Hopefully, I think that's kind of the whole goal with it. But what I hope doesn't happen is that Greek life gets abolished as a whole because I think there are a lot of benefits to it. Just get rid of the bad things you know," English expressed.
