Matadors women’s soccer secures most dominant win of season

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - No. 2 Arizona Western College women's soccer team continued its dominant season with a 10-0 victory to remain unbeaten at 9-0-2.

The game ended after the 70th minute due to the mercy rule.

Seven different Matadors found the back of the net in the lopsided win, led by Giovana Coutinho, who recorded a hat trick.

The Matadors were just as impressive on the defensive end, and tonight was another dominant showing as has been the case throughout the season.

Arizona Western has allowed only one goal all year, with goalkeeper Victoria Yuna anchoring a unit that continues to set program standards.

Following the victory, Arizona Western head coach Victor Verdugo emphasized the importance of maintaining an aggressive mindset in front of goal.

"We have to be ruthless in the box," Verdugo said. "That's what I keep telling the girls, and tonight was about that - [it was great] to put up ten. For me [moving forward], is can we go mercy rule the rest of our conference. [It's] that time of the year where these results start putting that thought process of 'You're gonna come here, that's where you're gonna get.'"

Arizona Western will look to carry its momentum into its next match when it travels to face Cochise College. Cochise enters the contest with an 8-4-4 record on the season.
