Firefighters make progress on wildfire burning in Angeles National Forest

(NBC, KYMA) - Firefighters made progress Sunday on a wildfire burning in the Angeles National Forest, but evacuations remained in place as extreme heat fueled the flames.

The Bouquet Fire had burned more than 1,000 acres northeast of Santa Clarita by Sunday afternoon, with containment nearly 50%.

The fire started Saturday near Bouquet Canyon Road and Quarry Road and quickly spread through rugged, dry terrain.

Mandatory evacuation orders remained in effect for three zones, with warnings covering eight others.

Officials urged anyone needing extra time to evacuate, including those with pets and livestock, to leave now.

Helicopters, air tankers and ground crews worked to contain flare-ups and protect nearby communities.

Bouquet Canyon Road remained closed, along with two off-highway vehicle recreation areas.

The fire is burning as California faces a prolonged heat wave, with temperatures forecast to reach the triple digits in some areas and conditions expected to increase wildfire risk.
