Help and SOS signs appear in drought stricken Switzerland lakebed

LES BRENETS, Switzerland (NBC, KYMA) - Switzerland is in the midst of a severe drought.

Giant help and SOS signs have been cut into a dry lakebed in Les Brenets along Switzerland's border with France.

It's unclear who carved those signs into a now grassy area of Lake Brenets, a well-known tourist destination that is almost completely dried up.

Tourist boats that once ferried visitors to a scenic waterfall have been unable to operate since mid-July, while restaurants and local businesses that depend on visitors have seen a devastating blow to their livelihoods.

The drought has already surpassed the extreme dry spell of 2018, previously considered a once-in-a-century event.
