A hayride in New York leaves several critically injured

NEW YORK (NBC, KYMA) - A hayride in Wellsburg, New York turned dangerous Sunday afternoon, leaving several people critically injured.

A tractor hayride ended in a serious crash Sunday afternoon in Wellsburg, with at least three people critically injured.

Chemung County officials say it happened shortly after 4:30 pm near Berwick Turnpike and Main Street.

They say officials witnessed a John Deere tractor speeding out of control down a local road, towing a wagon carrying about 20 people, most of them children.

Investigators say the driver tried to make a turn, causing the tractor to separate from the wagon and ejecting the passengers.

Over a dozen people were treated at the scene, while at least five others were taken to hospitals by ambulance.

Officials say the driver was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition.

The investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing.
