New weight loss drug shows major results in two new studies

(CBS, KYMA) - A new weight loss drug is showing major results in two new studies.

The GLP1 is called retatrutide.

In a trial of people with obesity, participants on the top dose lost about 25% of their body weight. That's about 60 pounds for a 250-pound person.

In a second study, people with Type 2 diabetes dropped about 19% of their body weight.

"The first generation like drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy had one mechanism of action. The next one, which is Mounjaro and Zepbound had two," said Dr. Celine Gounder, CBS News Medical Correspondent & Editor-at-Large for Public Health, KFF Health News. "Retatrutide has three mechanisms, so reducing the rate you digest food, so suppressing appetite, controlling blood sugar as well as helping you burn energy."

The once-a-week shot can come with side effects including nausea, the sensation of burning or tingling skin and low blood pressure.

Eli Lilly plans to ask the FDA for approval early next year.
