Padres take Game 1 against Cubs behind Tatis Jr., Machado homers and King gem

SAN DIEGO (KYMA) - Everything went right for the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of their National League Wild Card Series against the Chicago Cubs.

Fernando Tatis Jr. wasted no time, launching a home run on the first pitch of the game to give San Diego an early lead.

Two batters later, Manny Machado followed with a homer of his own, giving the Padres a quick 2-0 advantage.

The pitching was just as impressive.

Michael King carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and ultimately worked seven innings, allowing just one hit while shutting down one of Major League Baseball's most explosive offenses.

The Padres held on for the victory, earning their first home playoff win since Oct. 2, 2024.

San Diego will look to close out the best-of-three series in Game 2 on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will stream on Peacock.

A win would send the Padres to the National League Division Series, where they would face the Milwaukee Brewers.
