Padres and Diamondbacks remain in tight race for final wild card

MLB

SAN Diego, Calif. (KYMA) - As the MLB regular season winds down, the race for the final National League Wild Card spot remains one of the most compelling storylines in the region, with the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks continuing to battle for postseason positioning.

San Diego gained valuable ground on Arizona Wednesday night, defeating the Colorado Rockies 9-3 while the Diamondbacks fell 4-3 to the Miami Marlins. The results allowed the Padres to expand their lead over Arizona to three and a half games for the National League's third and final Wild Card berth.

Despite the growing gap in the standings, the race remains far from over. The Padres and Diamondbacks are scheduled to meet in the final series of the regular season, a three-game set in San Diego that could ultimately determine which team secures the final playoff spot.

The two clubs have split their season series to this point, each winning five games. If Arizona can close the gap and remain within two games of San Diego entering the final weekend, the head-to-head matchup could serve as the deciding factor in the Wild Card race.

Before that pivotal series arrives, both teams face challenging schedules. The Padres will host the Miami Marlins before traveling to Los Angeles for a series against the Dodgers. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks will welcome the New York Yankees before hitting the road for a trip to Colorado.

With only a handful of games remaining and a postseason berth hanging in the balance, every result will carry significant weight as the Padres and Diamondbacks continue their push toward October baseball.
