Kofa volleyball falls to West Foothills in three straight set

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Kofa High School’s volleyball team entered Tuesday night looking to snap a winless stretch in September, but the Kings were unable to slow down a strong 7-2 West Foothills squad, falling in straight sets and dropping to 2-4 on the season.

The game got off to a slower start for the Kings who dropped the first set 25-13.

In the second set, sophomore Makenzie Wharton helped keep the Kings within striking distance with a serve that allowed Kofa to trim the deficit to 21-18, but the Guardians held on to secure the every point the rest of the set.

West Foothills continued to apply pressure in the third set, though Kofa showed flashes of resilience. Junior Brooklyn Nguyen made a diving effort on the second point of the set, but was unable to keep the rally going.

Later in the frame, Wharton set up a scoring opportunity by bumping the ball to Ilianah Savali, who then found Michelle Osuna for a powerful spike. The play helped Kofa cut into the deficit as the Kings battled to stay within reach at 14-6.

With the Guardians closing in on victory, Savali handled a serve before Isabel Desautelle sent the ball back over the net. West Foothills responded by moving the ball around efficiently to create an opening for Laine Joncas, who delivered the match-winning spike.

The Guardians completed the sweep in three consecutive sets, handing Kofa its fourth loss of the season. The Kings will look to get back on track when they face Goodyear at home on Thursday.
