Cibola High School hosts West Wetlands Invitational

Yuma, Ariz. (KYMA) - West Wetlands park had lots of people on Saturday morning for a cross country invitational.

Cibola High School and several local high schools in the area came together for the West Wetlands Invitational in which a surprising boys varsity team came out on top.

The event started bright and early Saturday morning as several racers came out.

The Imperial transfer and Cibola senior, Giovanni Cabrera was able to cross the finish line first after trailing behind most of the race.

“I feel good. I wasn’t focused on my time because that sets you back a lot. Just focused on the competition. To be honest, I was second place the whole time and I came from behind in the last race and I wanted to do the same thing in which I did, Cabrera said.

Cibola has a new head coach, Bernardo Montoya and brings his rich history of running.

Giovanni is grateful for coach Montoya as he has helped him become a better runner.

"He was my track coach when I started track before I came and played cross country. And I’m just happy he is my coach," Cabrera said.

Despite Cibola's well performance, it was the Brawley Wildcats who got first place in the boys varsity.

Head coach David Obeso says it was an awesome feeling for his boys team to win the award.

"Well, it's awesome for us because in the history of cross country, only two other teams besides the Brawley's team today have ever won this invite. And coincidentally, they were teams that i coached at Calexico and Southwest high school," Obeso said.

For the girls side, Cibola dominated the competition as they easily came in first place.

Raiders senior runner Isabella Ochoa finished first for the girls varsity.
