Gloria Steinem, feminist icon, dies at 92

(NBC, KYMA) - Iconic feminist activist Gloria Steinem has died at the age of 92. For seven decades, Steinem led the march for women's rights.

As a journalist in the 1960's, she wrote about taboo topics like contraception, and later went undercover to expose the working conditions of Playboy Bunnies at New York's Playboy Club.

She helped create New York Magazine where she wrote about the women's liberation movement, and became one the faces of feminism, and along with Betty Friedan and Bella Abzug, she formed the National Women's Caucus.

In 1972, she co-founded Ms. Magazine. It was a groundbreaking departure from publications of the day. The pages of the magazine spoke out about abortion, domestic violence, and sexual harassment.

Over the decades, Steinem wrote books, campaigned for politicians, worked on federal legislation, and continuously spoke out for social change.

In 2000, Steinem married activist David Bale, father of Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale. He died just three years later.

Later in life, Steinem's life was retold, on stage and film.

She was even awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her tireless drive for equality, but Steinem never stopped advocating for women and girls.

A feminist revolution that led to a lifetime of activism.

According to a statement released by her family, she passed away Wednesday "peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her."
