Body of a missing 5-year-old girl found in South Carolina

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (NBC, KYMA) - The body of a missing 5-year-old girl was found near Pawley's Island South Carolina Monday morning.

Agents with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources recovered Saylor Hayes' body after an extensive search.

Hayes, who was nonverbal, went missing Sunday afternoon.

After she wandered from her family's rental home in the Hagley community. Sheriff Carter Weaver said Hayes and her family are from Virginia.

Multiple agencies and methods were deployed during the search, including drones, k-9s, divers and a sheriff's office helicopter equipped with project lifesaver equipment.

Which is used to locate people enrolled in the program who may wander.

A cause of death has not yet been released.
