Vigil held for college football player who died during the team’s season opener

LIBERTY, Mo. (NBC, KYMA) - Hundreds gathered Saturday night to remember a William Jewell College football player who died after a medical emergency during the team's season opener.

They came together for a candlelight vigil to honor Micahjo Barnett.

The junior running back died after suffering a medical emergency during the first quarter of Saturday's season opener against Fort Lewis College.

Barnett was a Liberty native and a former Liberty North athlete, William Jewell says he was majoring in business administration.

According to the school's play-by-play, Barnett scored the game's only touchdown before the medical emergency.

The game was later suspended.
