CAUGHT ON CAMERA:Devastating mudslide in Nepal captured on surveillance camera

NEPAL (NBC, KYMA) - Surveillance footage showed people attempting to flee seconds before a devastating mudslide engulfed the border crossing between Nepal and China Wednesday.

Torrential floods in the Himalayan border areas of Nepal and China's Tibet killed at least nine people there and destroyed roads, bridges and power projects.

As authorities in both countries braced for more casualties and worse damage.

Chinese president Xi Jinping urged search efforts for the missing as well as stronger monitoring and early warning systems to prevent secondary disasters.

China's official Xinhua news agency said the mudslide occurred on the Nepali side and hit the Gyirong port to cut roads, communications and power links in the Shigatse region near the border with Nepal.

A devastating flash flood swept through parts of Nepal, leaving a trail of destruction along the banks of the Bhote Koshi river, killing at least 72 people.

Hundreds of tourists, workers and others are missing after sweeping through communities and bringing travel to a halt.

Officials in Nepal said 384 tourists, including 291 from countries such as the United States, britain and Malaysia, were reported missing.

Tourism board officials said most likely were from India and the Indian diaspora on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a sacred site for Hindus.

Nepal's steep valleys are economic lifelines and travel corridors but precarious ones when disaster strikes.

The U.S. Geological survey reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake early Wednesday, about 60 miles north of Kathmandu, near the border with China's autonomous region of Tibet.
