Hurricane Lala downgraded to a tropical storm

HILO, HI. (NBC, KYMA) - Lala was downgraded back to a tropical storm Sunday as it passes to the south of Hawaii's smaller islands.

The storm slammed the Big Island on Saturday as a category 1 hurricane, bringing fierce winds, pouring rain and flooding.

Leaving one person dead in a storm related car crash, according to Governor Josh Green.

There are also reports of a number of homes being swept away in the downpour.

Severe conditions are expected to spread westward Sunday but deteriorate across Oahu.

Hawaii is under a tropical storm warning and residents are urged to remain sheltered.
