Two U.S. Army soldiers dead after helicopter crash at Fort Hood

BELL COUNTY, TX. (NBC, KYMA) - Two U.S. Army soldiers based at Fort Hood were killed Wednesday when their helicopter crashed in Bell County, Texas.

The crash also sparked a wild fire at the scene.

Bell County Sheriff Office spokesperson Cliff Coleman said they received a call about the crash around 1:30 p.m.

Coleman said several crews from central Texas responded immediately.

The helicopter that went down was an AH-64 Apache Attack, based at Fort Hood.

Fort Hood's Criminal Investigation Division has not released the names of the two soldiers who died but their investigation remains ongoing.

Right after the crash, fire officials had another situation on their hands, a wild fire had been sparked by the accident.

The Texas A&M fire service said the fire burned around 155 acres.

People along FM 28-43 were evacuated to safety as crews worked to get the fire under control.
