Tracking the end of an extended heat wave

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - After 18 straight days of extreme heat across the region, we finally are tracking a chance for some relief.

Although the Extreme Heat Warnings are lasting now through Monday night, I'm tracking a much needed cool down into the work week.

Sunday's highs are going to be hot. In Yuma, temperatures are tracking to peak at 110°F. While Imperial will run a few degrees warmer at 112°F.

Into Monday, temps should continue to drop. Yuma is expected to reach 108°F and Imperial is tracking to be at 109°F.

By Tuesday, we are expected to continue that drop off. With Yuma sitting at 105°F and Imperial at 106°F.

With the slight temperature drop comes a chance for some showers and thunderstorms. We're tracking a 20 to 30 percent chance of light rainfall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. With the thunderstorms more likely to be seen than the rain.

The moisture will be sticking with us as we end the weekend as well. Humid conditions will persist through the work week. Still tracking to see mostly tropical humidity over the next 48 hours.

Even with the cooldown, heat safety remains important. Afternoon temperatures will still climb well above 100°F, so residents should continue to stay hydrated, limit prolonged time outdoors during the hottest part of the day and never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.

The combination of lingering heat and increasing humidity can still create dangerous conditions, especially for those working or spending extended periods outside. Be mindful and try to stay cool out there folks.
