Person leaps onto highway barrier in Ohio seconds before crash

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CBS, KYMA) - A person standing with a disabled car on the shoulder of a busy highway in Ohio was forced to leap onto a cement barrier to avoid getting rammed by an oncoming vehicle in what one official called "the closest call I've ever seen."

In a video released by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), a person can be seen standing outside of a vehicle on the "emergency breakdown shoulder" of Interstate 670.

The video, timestamped August 3, shows two cars driving at speed in the lane toward the person. One car manages to get back off the shoulder in time to avoid a collision, but the second car rams the parked vehicle as the person scrambles onto the median.

ODOT Press Secretary Matt Bruning wrote on social media, "When the SmartLane on I-670 is closed, there's a reason. It is first and foremost an emergency breakdown shoulder and only opened when traffic conditions warrant it and only after it has been swept and cleared of any vehicles or debris. There are MULTIPLE signs alerting drivers when it is open and when it is closed. This is about the closest call (for the person who had to jump onto the median wall) I've ever seen. Pay attention!"
