FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Tracking brutal heat and record potential this weekend

A Weather Authority First Alert Action Day is staying in effect until Monday for the prolonged extreme heat. As we kick off August, I am tracking some of the hottest temperatures of the summer and nearing record potential this weekend. Stay cool and hydrated this weekend.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY-TV) - An Air Quality Alert is issued for parts of Imperial County due to high ozone levels. This is in effect until 8 p.m. TONIGHT.

A Weather Authority First Alert Action Day is in effect until 8 pm MONDAY for the Desert Southwest for dangerous and ongoing heat.

There is potential for heat-related illnesses, so it is important to practice heat safety at all times.

An Extreme Heat Warning is staying in effect until 8 p.m. Monday for the entire Desert Southwest due to major and extreme heat risk.

Highs will be between 111-121 degrees, and overnight lows between 80-94 degrees.

As we head into the weekend, we do have EXTREME HEAT RISK. Take a look at the National Weather Service heat risk chart to see how this heat will impact your weekend.

A ridge of high pressure will center itself over our region, resulting intense heat and nearing record territory this weekend.

Also, tracking drier air that will be filtering bringing in lower humidity.

A Weather Authority First Alert Action Day is in effect and EXTEDNED until 8 pm MONDAY for the Desert Southwest for dangerous and ongoing heat.

Tracking even hotter temperatures to return later this week and into the weekend with highs nearing or reaching 120. Also watching for any record breaking temperatures.

It's going to be a very hot start to August. I am tracking cooler and finally some relief toward the end of next week.

With the high heat, especially this weekend, make sure to practice heat safety through out the day as we will have little to no relief from the hot weather. be safe!
