Highway 86 closed following semi crash in California

THERMAL, Calif. (KYMA) - Highway 86 shut down Thursday morning after a crash involving two big rigs.

It happened on Airport Boulevard and Highway 86 in Thermal, California, just south of Coachella, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said one big rig overturned.

Footage captured shows debris scattered across the highway, and traffic had to be re-routed to State Route 111.

CHP said one person was taken to the hospital with neck and back injuries.

"And it appears another big rig came up in the slow lane and drifted to the right and hit the disabled tractor that was on the shoulder, causing what you see in the road," said Sgt. James Moran with CHP.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
