Jury in Imperial County delivers guilty verdicts in two cases

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA) - The Imperial County District Attorney's Office said the jury in two different court cases delivered guilty verdicts.

On Wednesday, July 22, the jury found 36-year-old Humberto Contreras Jr. guilty of felony receiving stolen property in connection to him possessing "very valuable coins that had been stolen a few days prior to being found with him in his truck by the Brawley Police Department (BPD)."

Contreras, according to a press release, told BPD he was given the coins by other people after "trading them some cash and drugs."

The D.A.'s Office said Contreras is set to be sentenced in September.

On Tuesday, another jury found 62-year-old Anthony Scott Grantham guilty on all charges, including driving in the wrong direction while fleeing a police officer.

Earlier this year, the Imperial County Sheriff's Office (ICSO) contacted Grantham who ran away in a vehicle he was driving, leading ICSO deputies to chase him.

During the chase, Grantham engaged in "extremely dangerous driving including driving over 100
miles per hour as well as driving in the wrong direction of vehicle travel."

The chase, according to the D.A.'s Office, lasted over 70 miles, and Grantham was captured with help from U.S. Border Patrol.

Following the verdict, it was discovered that Grantham had a previous felony for first-degree residential burglary, as well as having previously went to prison for "felony recklessly driving a vehicle to flee a" police officer back in 2020.

Grantham, who has been in custody since his arrest earlier this year as well as his previous convictions, will remain in custody, and will be sentenced in August.
