Community calling for accountability in the death of K9 officer Chilli

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (NBC, KYMA) - There is a growing push for accountability after a North Carolina K-9 officer died after being left in a hot car.

Images of K-9 officer Chilli are all over social media following news of her death.

People who are advocating for a more detailed investigation say they won't stop.

That includes Tim Peaden, a retired Pitt County K-9 handler. He says the sheriff's office's story just doesn't add up.

"I don't understand how you can just go to a training and get back and then leave her in the car for four hours.", said Peaden.

Thomas Rosario is a veteran who worked with K-9s in the military.

He started a Facebook page calling for more transparency with chilli's death that's seeing an outpour of support.

Veterinarian Dr. Anne Eldridge didn't want to comment on this case, but says, " it's dangerous for pet owners to leave their dog in the car alone, especially when it's hot."

The Sheriff's Office says while the SBL may assist law enforcement upon request, it is not required in every situation involving a law enforcement employee.
