How to take care of your vehicle during extreme heat

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The summer heat can be tough on more than just people. With triple-digit temperatures in the forecast, local mechanics said extreme heat can also put stress on vehicles.

Russell McCloud with Accurate Automotive said some of the most common issues drivers face during the summer months involve batteries, tires, and air conditioning systems.

McCloud said high temperatures can cause batteries to wear down faster, while the heat can also put added stress on a vehicle’s cooling system and other components.

Tires are another concern during the summer. McCloud said drivers should regularly check tire pressure and watch for signs of wear, especially when roads are extremely hot.

When it comes to staying cool, McCloud said drivers should pay attention to warning signs with their vehicle’s AC system before a small issue turns into a larger, more expensive repair.

He recommended keeping up with routine maintenance, checking fluids, and addressing problems early to help avoid breakdowns during extreme heat.

With a heat warning in effect, mechanics said taking a few simple steps can help protect both drivers and their vehicles.
