President Trump threatens 100% tariffs on imported generic drugs

(NBC, KYMA) - President Donald Trump is threatening a 100% tariff on imported generic drugs.

President Trump issued his warning in a post to social media Tuesday night, noting the tariff would go into effect in August of 2028 in order to "reshore generic pharmaceutical production into America."

Generic drugs are expected to maintain a 0% tariff for now, but "will be raised to 100% for a one year period of time, and 200% thereafter."

The administration has not yet released an official policy implementing the tariffs, but if implemented, the move could upend the generic drug industry as most products are manufactured in factories in Europe and India.

The president's announcement comes as branded drugs will be subject to tariffs as high as 100 percent at the end of the month.
